Gauteng members attend Global Money Week event

SaveAct participated in a weekend event in Soweto hosted by African Financial Inclusion Network, Positive Planet International and partners. Held at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, the theme of the event was financial inclusion of youth, and it was part of Global Money Week (GMW).

GMW, held from 25-31 March, is an annual global financial awareness campaign aimed at inspiring children and young people to learn about money matters, livelihoods and entrepreneurship. The campaign is an initiative of Child and Youth Finance International (CYFI).

At Saturday’s morning workshop those present, who included members of SaveAct’s two Gauteng savings groups, Asonge and Masakane, participated in a financial education training session on budgeting and managing debt.

“We have learned a lot. We need more of the same,” said Asonge member Nomsisi Magadla after the workshop.

In the afternoon, SaveAct programme manager Nolufefe Nonjeke-Dlanjwa and Sandra Atkins-Sadler, CFO of IBM South African, shared their life stories with an audience of mainly young people.

Nonjeke-Dlanjwa’s message was about working hard, contributing to the lives of others and having the right relationship with money so as to change the narrative of the lives of the youth of South Africa.
