SaveAct is building a multi-stakeholder, partner-driven programme for southern Africa. It has been tested and refined over 20 years. Our approach has proven impact in providing opportunities for women and youth to advance their wellbeing, agency and livelihoods.
SaveAct has the goal of scaling its programme with partners to reach two million people over 10 years, equipping them with the tools to develop their livelihoods and acquire resilience to climate shocks.
SaveAct is seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a Senior Trainer in our Pietermaritzburg office. You will play a pivotal role in leading and managing regional projects. You will be able to provide strong facilitation and training to partners and participants across a range of methodologies associated with our stepwise approach to enabling women and youth to take control of their lives and map their life pathways.
You will be reflective and analytical, and skilled in facilitating training as well as team and partner-based collaborations. An ability to follow and apply defined models and training guides, and to train others in these guides is a requirement. You will be expected to supervise others to implement these methods. You will have strong project management and report writing abilities too as well as very good interpersonal skills. Fluency in isiZulu is a requirement. Proficiency in additional local languages, particularly those spoken in the local regions, will be considered an advantage.
Objectives of this role:
- You will work with and support the senior management team to implement SaveAct’s plans for expanding its methods and programme with partners.
- You will be effective in working with rural women and their networks, to assist them in finding their collective voice as leaders of savings groups and clusters of these groups.
- You will also work with empowering young people by designing and delivering interactive training sessions that build their skills and capacity to drive positive change in their communities.
You will be expected to have knowledge and experience in:
- Asset-based frameworks and methodologies
- Advanced facilitation and training skills
- Social, economic and gender inequalities and exposure to strategies that equip women to take steps to overcome systemic barriers
- The principles and core practices of agroecology
- Exposure to savings methodologies and the role of money and the economics in vulnerable households
- Work with a team of dedicated practitioners, building a programme for expansive impact on the region
- Lead the development of partner-based project implementation.
- Contribute to a collaborative and collegial ecosystem with staff and programme partners, including a community of practice.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement projects and partnerships that align with SaveAct’s short- and long-term objectives, working closely with senior management.
- Contribute to the design and drafting of scopes of work and costings to submit to donors.
- Contribute to curriculum updates and refinements.
- Form part of a team that trains trainers and supports them as they move into their field work.
- Be a high quality trainer of savings groups in financial wellness, and in SaveAct’s savings methodology, agroecology and micro-enterprise.
- Conduct internal operations analysis (including data gathering and analytics).
- Use of systems to monitor the performance of projects, field activities, trainers, partners, their trainers and community based trainers, take corrective actions when required, and provide detailed updates and forecasts.
- Cultivate and sustain trusting relationships with key stakeholders, partners, and donors. Existing networks will be an advantage.
Required skills and qualifications:
- Five or more years of field experience in a training and project management role in a related field.
- Strong leadership with a team-orientated culture, high personal integrity and determination.
- Proposal writing skills and abilities to detail a vision for change matched to timeframes, resources and costs.
- Comfortable in the use of Excel for budgeting and experience in the main application of MS Office systems for multi-year planning and budgeting/forecasting.
- Ability to swiftly diagnose problems and anticipate potential challenges.

This is a one-year contract with a probable extension. The candidate will be Pietermaritzburg-based or able to spend extended periods there.
